Looking back now some of the Acid Jazz recordings to come out in the late 80′s / early 90′s can appear a bit dated now. Amongst this arena “Road To Freedom” shone with genuine soul appeal. The voice of Carleen Anderson singing “We are here on a mission…”, as a Hammond organ breezes into life is gonna catch your attention. The first track “Get Yourself Together” fires up with the aid of a sample from Prince’s “Sign O’ The Times“, leading into the single ‘Apparently nothin’ (soul river)’. Recorded at Paul Weller’s Solid Bond Studios, the whole production speaks of pure class. Carleen, along with club DJ’s Marco and Femi create a great collection of songs here. All the tracks are well worth a listen. There a good representation of UK hip-hop from that time with the likes of Masta Ace, MC Mell’O’ and The Outlaw Posse, as well as more seasoned musicians like Maceo Parker, Mick Talbot and Paul Weller. This is one of those rare occasions where you wish they had recorded a second album.
