In 1964 Brown thought his contract with King was over, so he formed his own production company Fair Deal, and signed with the Mercury subsidiary Smash. King sued and got an injunction against Brown singing on any recordings. Brown was thus forced to release two instrumental albums on Smash. Grits & Soul was the second album, and reached #9 on the RnB charts. The record let Brown get back to his first love, the organ, as he plays keys on a combination of RnB and Jazz instrumentals. The best song is probably the upbeat swing tune Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and the catchy Wee Wee.
